Jim Keen was featured in the August 29, 2008 edition (pdf) of the Mountain and Plains Independant Bookseller's Association eNewsletter as the winner of the 2008 Arts Award.

The Independent Publisher Book Awards presented Jim Keen with the Bronze Medal for "Great Ranches of the West" in the "Coffee Table Book Category" of 2008's IPPY Awards.

For 12 years the IPPY Awards have been "Recognizing Excellence in Independent Publishing". This year books came from 49 U.S. states, D.C., and U.S. Virgin Islands; 9 Canadian provinces and Territories; and 16 countries around the world.

The judges said, "The quality of this year's entries is totally amazing, and judging was difficult, as we saw better designed books, read higher quality writing. and were exposed to more sophisticated concepts. ...we were impressed with the breathtaking artwork and photography in our fine arts and coffee table book entries."

They present these awards, "in hopes that all of these books and their authors will be recognized for their excellence, and get all the attention they deserve."

An exhibit of Jim's work, "Great Ranches of the West," was on display at the Denver International Airport (June 1, 2005) as a benefit for the FFA Foundation.

The following article was featured in the Ranch Foods Direct newsletter article on June 3, 2005

Award winning photographer and filmmaker Jim Keen directs his cameras at the beauty of the landscape and the vanishing life-style of the people in "The Great Ranches of the West." He is telling the stories of these hardy people of the land. "The Great Ranches of the West" project will include a coffee table book and fine art exhibits. Many of the cowboys and cowgirls featured in this project have lived on the same land for five, six or seven generations. They know ranching. As you will find out they have to be environmentalists, tractor repairmen, accountants, plumbers, veterinarians, carpenters, lawyers, soil and wetland managers, weathermen and mother and father among other things.

Challenging indeed.

The challenges facing the American rancher are more than that, however. In 1993 there were nearly 900,000 cattle producing ranches in our country. In 2004 that number had dropped to about 775,000. This decline is a complex problem with no single solution. One key though is education of the next generation. That is why Jim is donating 20% of the sales from this exhibit at DIA to the FFA Foundation. FFA is a national youth organization of 476,732 student members preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture. There are 7,223 local chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. FFA strives to make a positive difference in the lives of these students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. This organization was founded in 1928 and educates students from 12 to 21 years of age.
