“Ranch manager Cal Hancock tells me it has been colder that this already this winter. He takes it in stride since the cattle need to be fed no matter what the weather conditions. Temperatures can swing from one extreme to another here. Cal remembers one March day several years ago when the temperature went from a minus thirty degrees to sixty above within eight hours. Today’s traveler has to be prudent about venturing out into Wyoming winters. The week before I came on the ranch, businessmen anxious to get home made the decision to fly a small private plane in a snowstorm. They didn’t make it, crashing into a mountain on the ranch. Cal and I drive for an hour on ranch roads looking for the wreckage, but the property is so vast we don’t find a thing. The closes we come to it are the tracks of the FAA investigators heading cross-country in the snow.”
