Haythorn Ranch – NE. Great Ranches of the West

“Craig and wife, Jody; sons Sage and Cord, and Craig’s mother, Bel, host the auction, where this year 343 quarter horses sell to registered buyers from across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The Haythorns run Longhorn, Black Angus, and Hereford cattle on their 75,000 deeded and leased acres, yet the horses are what the Haythorns are famous for. This ranch is one of the largest breeders of registered quarter horses in the U.S. The 500 horses branded with a figure four actually work the cattle, and every cowhand trains his mount for cutting and roping. When the horse is finally sold at auction, the cowboy who trained it shares in up to ten percent of the profits. Craig’s late father, Waldo Haythorn, once said, ‘You can’t sell a man’s horse and expect him to make another good one overnight.'”
