Nunn Ranch – NM. Great Ranches of the West

“The Nunn sons became involved in the last of the “range wars” of the New Mexico Territory. There was virtually no law enforcement in the Territory in those days, so it was common for a gun to settle disputes. When the “good guys” won a battle, it was another step of bringing peace and security to an otherwise chaotic environment. The boys had constant friction with one particular gang of homesteaders who filled the Nunn’s well with rocks and vandalized the ranch property. Hoping to resolve the problems, the three brothers rode out to the homestead. But before they could get close enough to talk, shots rang out from atop the homestead windmill. Two men were shooting to kill. The Nunn brothers jumped from their horses, running for cover. They returned fire, and two men plummeted from their windmill perch. A third gunman hiding out at ground level took a bullet and fell backwards. In an instant, it was over. The Nunn brothers rose from their cover and cautiously approached to check the bodies as an eerie stillness descended over the homestead. All three men were dead. The brothers buried the bodies right where they fell. One of the Nunn brothers was charged with murder, but was quickly acquitted of any wrongdoing.”
